City TRIP

Kyoto

We immediately fell in love with Kyoto on our first visit in 2019. The fusion of centuries-old history and modern zeitgeist still characterises the city today and inspired us again this year. In a special way, multi-layered architecture blends with a lively creative scene, living tradition with Western flair and historical sights with expansive nature. That's why we simply had to come back to rediscover the familiar and – off the beaten track – experience previously unseen facets of Kyoto.

First novelty: our accommodation. In 2024, we wanted something that reminded us of times gone by and combined the charm of yesterday with the comforts of today. That's why we chose the Marufukuro. This small but exclusive hotel not far from the Kamo River made a deep impression on us with its living history, architecture and interior. And thanks to the excellent service, all our wishes were more than fulfilled.

A small architectural highlight in Kyoto this time was the Face House – an iconic building by architect Kazumasa Yamashita. With its playful, face-shaped facade, the building stands out from the surrounding row of houses and shows how experimental architecture may take shape in Kyoto.

But not all the special features were so easy to find. Anyone who is enthusiastic about the mixture of traditional craftsmanship and timeless design language will love Studio POJ. In this very fine, somewhat hidden studio, the handmade objects reflect the creative spirit of Kyoto. Stylish accessories made of hemp, wooden hand flatterers and minimalist ceramics were attractive souvenirs that remind us of Kyoto every time we see them when we get home.

If you are looking for a special souvenir of a completely different kind, you will find it at B-Side Label. The brand specialises in original, humorous stickers, ranging from Japanese motifs to pop culture designs. The assortment has since been expanded to include magnets, cloths, pencil cases and plush figures. Always with original B-Side motifs. Here there is a little piece of Japan for everyone to take home.

Kyoto is perfect for spontaneous explorations. The flat streets and manageable distances invite you to explore the city on foot or by bike. Not only did we easily reach iconic places such as the Kitano Tenman-gū Shrine and Arashiyama Park, but also charming shops and cafés in hidden alleyways.

We experienced the fusion between Kyoto's history and its inhabitants of today at the Heian Antique Market. This market, which takes place regularly opposite the Heian Shrine in Okazaki Park, offers an impressive variety of antiques and handicrafts. What fascinated us most, however, was the incredibly relaxed atmosphere and the coolness of the local sellers and collectors.

Kyoto is worth living and loving. With all the diversity and authenticity that this city has to offer, Kyoto tells stories that inspire, excite, animate, amaze and revitalise. We will be back. For sure!
