Marufukuro
“Level up” could be the motto of the Marufukuro, whose 18 rooms, lounge and games room, library and bar are a ‘hidden gem’ to be experienced in Kyoto’s colourful boutique hotel world. After its transformation into a hotel, the former Nintendo headquarters exudes the charm, playfulness and history of days gone by. The influence of Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who revitalised the atmosphere of the 1930s with his clever aesthetics and typical minimalism, has played a large part in this.
The Marufukuro itself is a journey through time, where we not only move through past eras, but also discover something new on every floor. Original glass mosaics provide the shapes and colours for stylishly coordinated textured wallpaper and wool carpets. Old lamp shapes find their place alongside leather armchairs, bouclé cushions and finely carved wooden ornaments. Graphic tiles on the floor continue what is hinted at on the brick-shaped walls. And our room? Signed by Tadao Ando himself! The large, light-flooded space on the first floor leaves nothing to be desired with its soft furnishings, calming colour scheme, branded courtesies and a constantly stocked minibar.
There is no doubt that the service at Marufukuro takes the terms ‘courteous’ and ‘helpful’ to a whole new level. Every request was read from the lips, noted down and saved ready for the following days. Every question about the building and the rich history of the Marufukuro was answered with friendliness and expertise. We are sure that Super Mario would have jumped at the chance to provide this service.
Nintendo vibes and a good dose of history can be found in the Marufukuro library. This ‘treasure trove’ almost feels like the bonus level of the hotel. In addition to countless thematically related books on art, photography and architecture, the library is above all an exhibition space for the Nintendo consoles of days gone by. Accompanied by corresponding literature and catalogues, they remind us of how small ideas become big adventures and how the urge to play still burns under our nails.
To bring the evening to a relaxed close, we have a drink in the bar next door – even with a view over the city thanks to the open-level terrace. The Kamo River is just a few steps away. And all the traditional Machiya houses, small cafés, shops and hideaways on the riverbank, which we explored during the day on the hotel's own electric bikes, now shine in the glittering evening light.
Experiencing the many facets of the Marufukuro is worth a stay in itself. It is more than just a hotel where you spend the night. It is a place to marvel, discover and experience. A place where classic elegance and playful charm harmonise tangibly. Or as Mario says when he starts a new level: “Here we go again!”
